The Forest Institute has the mission to form professionals who practise the use of the Forests respecting the principles conservation of the nature and man socialization with renewable natural resources. The institute also assumes important role in integrated formation of the knowledge, aiming at the sustainable development, in the certainty that the Forest Engineering students acquire the most advanced scientific and technological knowledge possible within the area of Forest Science.

The professors, in the majority with exclusive dedication, play their role in the most complete attribution, teaching, carrying out research and extension. Many of these activities are decurrent of accords between public, private institutions, of the third sector and Research Financial Support Agencies, with a wide thematic spectrum . The chances offered to student are, grant for Scientific Initiation and periods of training, insertion in academic projects and scientific activities, motivating and giving them vocations.

21 Technician-Administrative employees, 33 Professors which 4 are substitutes. Within the 29 effective professors there are, 23 Doctors, 4 Masters and 2 Graduates.

The organizacional disposal of the Forest Institute is constituted of the Departmental Council, Administrative Secretary, Computer Laboratory, Forest Biotechnology Center (in construction), Forest and Environment Scientific Periodic, Forest Environment Technical Series and Forest Engineer Residence. The Institute has Postgraduation program in Environment and Forests Sciences (PGCAF) in level of Master and Doctor Science, beyond sheltering an Academic Center in Forest Engineering and the Junior Company (Florajunior).

The institute is constituted in sub-units of education, responsible for the staff distribution, administrative, didactic and scientific organization, thus called Silviculture, Forest Products and Environment Sciences Departments.

The Forest Institute as an unit of education has the mission to manage administratively and academically Resources, Plans, Accords and Projects to give support to Departments from an organisational point of view aiming at to the formation of Forest Engineer, Master and Doctors in Environment and Forest Sciences competitive to the work market.

The Institute also acts divulging the development scientific, through events with great impact in the society under the point of view of the conservation and the production, engage to support development. Located next to Highway BR-465 (Ancient Highway Rio Sao Paulo) Seropédica city - RIO DE JANEIRO, inside university campus there is a charming place surrounded of Forest, being an area of preference for walked and rest in for the university community and for the visitors.

This is the only school of Forest Engineering and the only Program of Postgraduation in Environment and Forest Sciences in Rio de Janeiro State. However, the students come from different city of Rio de Janeiro State and also from other states from Brazil. They are more than 440 graduation students and about 42 in Postgraduation, congregating in the university life different levels of knowledge, customs, divulging and forming professional that also assimilate our culture, leading of return to its states of origin.
